With Joomla 2.5 safely released the focus of development is shifting to 3. Joomla 3.1 was released in April 2013. This is the second of a new series (3.0/3.1/3.2/3.5) and maintaining backwards compatibility with 2.5 will not be required.
Joomla! 2.5 is the current LTS version. The previous LTS version, Joomla 1.5, is still widely used and will be supported with security fixes only until September 2012.
