Version Changes
Menu Item Manager is a new screen in Joomla! 1.5. It was part of the Menu Manager in the 1.0.x series.
* The Menu and Default toolbar buttons were added.
* The filter field was completed with the Go and Reset buttons.
* The Select State drop down filter is a new feature as well. You can narrow the list for the published/unpublished menu items by selecting the appropriate option.
* The Default column was added.
* Reorder and Order columns merged into one Order column.
* The Access column is renamed to Access Level.
* CID column removed.
* A column can be sorted ascending/descending by clicking the column header.
* The removed menu items are dropped into the Menu Trash

Column Headers
Typical Usage
The menu items of each menu created can be handled in the Menu Item Manager. The type in square brackets is appended to the screen title, e.g. "Menu Item Manager: [topmenu]".

The Menu Item Manager can be opened by clicking a menu in the Menus menu.
Using the Menus toolbar button you can open the Menu Manager.

Only one click is needed to display the Menu Manager instead of using the Menus -> Menu Manager menu item.

Using the Default toolbar button you can set a selected menu item as the home page on the front-end of your site.

You can create new menu items by clicking the New toolbar button. When you want to modify the parameters of an existing one, then select its checkbox and click the Edit toolbar button or just simply click it and the Menu Item: [ Edit ] screen will be loaded.

One menu item can be published/unpublished by clicking the icon in the Published column. The published menu items are marked with a green tick while the unpublished ones are marked with a red X. When you want to publish/unpublish several menu items, select their checkboxes and click the appropriate toolbar button.

You can copy one or more menu items to another existing menu. Just select the checkbox(es) and click the Copy toolbar button. The following page will be loaded.

Please select the target menu in the Copy to Menu list box and click the Copy toolbar button to complete the process. If you change your mind and do not wish to copy your menu item(s), then you can stop it by clicking the Cancel button on the toolbar.

You can move one or more menu items to another existing menu. Just select the checkbox(es) and click the Move toolbar button. The following page will be loaded.

Please select the target menu in the Move to Menu list box and click the Move toolbar button to complete the process. If you change your mind and do not wish to move your menu item(s), then you can stop it by clicking the Cancel button on the toolbar.

One or more menu items can be trashed using the Trash toolbar button. You have to select the checkboxes of the menu items to be deleted. Similarly to the articles, they are moved to the Trash that can be opened by the Menus -> Menu Trash menu item. A similar page will be loaded like the image below:

One or more selected menu items can be restored by clicking the Restore toolbar button. When they are really unnecessary in the future, just click the Delete toolbar button and they will be permanently deleted.

The items can be moved up/down by clicking the arrows in the list, or they can be renumbered by entering a value in the field next to the arrow. In this case the order should be saved by clicking the floppy icon.

The Max Levels and Select state drop down lists make it easier to narrow the list of your choice, or you can enter a string in the Filter field and press the Go button and only the matching items will be listed.

Quick Tips
It is much easier to set the default page of your site now. You do not need to move a menu item to the first position to set it. You can simply and easily do it using the Default toolbar button. It is not limited to the main menu by now, you can set it in any of the available menus.

Points to Watch
The default menu item can neither be unpublished nor trashed.

Dependencies
Alternatively the Menu Item Manager can be accessed by clicking the icon in the Menu Item(s) column in the Menu Manager.

When you enter the administration back-end and click the Menu Stats module in the Control Panel, it will list the available menus and their published menu items. The menu types are linked to their Menu Item Manager screens, so there is a third way to open them. See the image below.

Quick Tips
It is much more easier to set the default page of your site by now. You need not to move a menu item to the first position to set it.

The menu types are linked to their Menu Item Manager screens, so it is a third way to open it. See the image below.
* Type column
* ID column

Column Headers
Typical Usage
You can open the Menu Manager by clicking its quick icon in the Control Panel after logging in the administration back-end or you can access it from the Menus -> Menu Manager menu item.

Using the Menu Manager you can create your menus containing your menu items. This screen summarizes the details of the available menus by displaying the number of published/unpublished, trashed menus and the number of the modules.

You can create a new menu by clicking the New toolbar button. You can edit an existing one by selecting it and clicking the Edit button on the toolbar or by clicking its title. When you want to create a copy of a menu just select it and click the Copy toolbar button and the following screen will be displayed:

As you see, the copying menu and its contained menu items are also listed on this screen.

You should fill in two fields:
* Enter the title in the New Menu Title field.
* Type in the module name in the New Module Name field.
Click the Copy toolbar button to complete the process. If you decide not to create the copy of the menu, then click the Cancel button on the toolbar.

You can remove an unnecessary menu by selecting it and clicking the Delete toolbar button and the following screen will be loaded:

The details are summarized on this screen, so it easier for you to make your decision. Click the Delete toolbar button to complete the process. If you decide not to remove the copy of the menu, then click the Cancel button on the toolbar.

Quick Tips
It is expedient to give talkative title for new menus because later you will see it in the Backend Menus menu. Its is good idea to fill in the Description field where you can give some information about the menu. As well it is expedient to enter a short title in the Modul title field, with this name you can identify the module in the Module Manager that belongs to the respective menu.

Create a copy in the Module Manager

Though you can create a copy of a selected menu by clicking the Copy toolbar button, you can make another instance in the Module Manager easier.

Points to Watch
Creating a new menu

When you want to create a new menu, in the Unique Name field use only english alphanumeric characters without space to identify an unique name. It is good idea using only a-z, 0-9 and underscore (_) characters. Please read the tooltips as well!

Deleting an existing menu

If you delete an existing menu, do not forget that all of menuitems of the respective menu will be also deleted. So think over what you do!

Main Menu cannot be deleted

Main Menu is your default menu and cannot be deleted. That's why it is marked with an asterisk (*) in the Menus menu.

Dependencies
Each menu is a copy of the mod_mainmenu module. These modules are listed in the Module Manager and their details and parameters can be customized by opening them.

The menu items belonging to a specific menu listed in the Menu Item Manager can be accessed by clicking the icon in the Menu Item(s) column of the Menu Manager.
You can extend your Joomla! based website functions installing different type of extensions (addons). The Installer is a useful tool for installing the extensions in one place fast and correctly. The addons can be installed from your local hard drive (intallation package), from an install directory of your website or from an URL you give. Also with this tool you can uninstall every type of extension.
Version Changes
In Joomla! 1.0 the components, modules, mambots (called as plugins in Joomla! 1.5), templates and languages could be installed separately via their appropriate screens from the menu items of the Installers menu.

It's much more simple by now in Joomla! 1.5 as the installer got smarter because it can detect the extension type and continue the installation process.
It was not possible to install a remote file from a specified URL.

In Joomla! 1.0.x the available extensions were listed on their installation screens. In Joomla! 1.5 it was changed to a multi-tabbed interface, providing an easier and simpler solution for managing your installed extensions.
Typical Usage
The Installer can be opened from Extensions -> Install/Uninstall menu item. You can choose the mode of the installation. The mode used most frequently is the Upload Package File.

Upload Package File

In the upload field named Package file you can specify the package of the extension to install. If the GZip support is enabled with PHP on your server, the installer can extract the contents of a zipped or gzipped archive. You can browse your local hard drive and search for the package to upload with the Browse... button. After you found the package on your local drive, select it in the Upload File window and click on the Open button, so the specified package name with the path appears in the Package file field. Click on the Upload File & Install button. Joomla! uploads the package and automatically installs it. You can read a message about the success of the procedure. If you get an error message, read it thoughtfully and make the correction.

Install from Directory

Create a temporary directory on your hard drive and decompress the compressed package into it, then with FTP you can upload the files and directories of the package into a directory on the server. Then in the Install Directory field specify the directory where you have uploaded the files and directories of the package. After that click on the Install button and Joomla! automatically installs the content of the given directory. You can read a message about the success of the procedure. If you get an error message, read it thoughtfully and make the correction.

Install from URL

In the Install URL field specify the URL of the package to upload and click on the Install button and Joomla! automatically installs it. You can read a message about the success of the procedure. If you get an error message, read it thoughtfully and make the correction.

Uninstalling the installed extensions

Click on one of the tabs on basis of which type of extension you want to uninstall. In the list select the extension and click on the Uninstall icon on the upper-right side of the screen. Joomla! automatically uninstalls the specified extension.

You can uninstall more modules, plugins, languages and templates in one step but you can uninstall only one component at a time.

Quick Tips
Think twice if you want to uninstall a Joomla addon. For example sometimes it is a good idea to unpublish the modules you don't want to show on frontend. Generally the embedded Joomla modules cannot be reinstalled without a hitch.

Disable a component

If you do not want to use a component, then switch to the Components tab and click the green tick in the Enabled column. The green tick will be replaced with a red X. The disabled component will disappear in the Components menu.

Support old extensions in Legacy Mode

Some old 1.0.x extensions support Joomla! 1.5 in Legacy Mode. To be able to install such extensions please open the Plugin Manager screen from the Extensions menu and enable plugin System - Legacy as it is disabled by the default.

Points to Watch
Some Core or System addons (Component, Module, Plugin) cannot be uninstalled so cannot be selected for uninstallation. Also the Default Template and Language are disabled for selection.

Important: Do not delete the Default Template and Languege files using FTP because it issues in error both front-end and back-end!

When you want to install a 3rd party developed module or plugin which belongs to a component, please keep in mind that you cannot use it unless you install the related component.

When you uninstall a 3rd party developed component having its own module(s) or plugin(s), these modules cannot be used any more, so please uninstall them as well.

Some components coded by 3rd party developers may have their own modules and/or plugins included in the installer, so make sure the module/plugin directories are writable otherwise the extension will not work properly.

<font color="#ff0000">SECURITY WARNING: Please use only those 3rd party extensions on your site which you really need. Do not use your live site for testing purposes because it may compromise your site and server.

Please do not install Joomla! extensions downloaded from warez sites because they may be infected by a virus or malware that cause damage on the server and can contaminate the computer of your visitors! Installing from remote URL can be dangerous as well.
</font>

Dependencies
An installed component will be registered and listed in the Components menu.

You can assign a menu item to an installed component in the Menu Item Manager by clicking the New toolbar button. You can select it in the Internal Link branch.

An installed module will be added to the list of the Module Manager where you can enable/disable it or customize its parameters.

An installed plugin will be added to the list of the Plugin Manager where you can enable/disable it or customize its parameters.

An installed template will be added to the Site or Administrator list of the Template Manager where you can assign it to all of the pages or to the selected ones and customize its parameters, edit the HTML or CSS source or preview the available module positions.

An installed language will be added to the Site or Administrator list of the Language Manager depending on the client attribute where you can set it as the default language.

System - Legacy plugin should be enabled to be able to install the prepared Joomla! 1.0.x extensions.

</font>

The mode used the most frequently is the Upload Package File.

Have another think if you want to uninstall one of Joomla addon. For example sometimes it is good idea to unpublish the modules you don't want to show on frontend.

Some Core or System addons (Component, Module, Plugin) cannot be uninstalled. This ones cannot be selected for uninstalling. Also the Default Template and Language are disabled for selecting.

Important: Do not delete the Default Template and Languege files using FTP because it issues in error both front-end and back-end!

When you want to install a 3rd party developed module or plugin which belongs to a component, please keep in mind that you cannot use it unless you install the related component.

When you uninstall a 3rd party developed component having its own module(s) or plugin(s), these modules cannot be used anymore, so please uninstall them as well.

</font>

Dependencies
An installed component will be registered and listed in the Components menu.

Description

It was not possible to install a remote file from the specified URL.

In Joomla! 1.0.x the available extensions were listed on their installation screens. In Joomla! 1.5 it was changed to a multi-tabbed interface, providing an easier and simplier solution for managing your installed extensions.
Typical Usage
The Installer can be opened from Extensions -> Install/Uninstall menu item. You can choose the mode of the installation. The mode used the most frequently is the Upload Package File.

Upload Package File

In the upload field named Package file you can specify the package of the extension to install. If the GZip support is enabled with PHP on your server, the installer can extract the contents of a zipped or gzipped archive. You can browse your local machine and search for the package to upload with Browse... button. After you found the package on your local machine, select it in the Upload File window and click on the Open button, so the specified package name with path appears in the Package file field. Click on the Upload File & Install button! Joomla! uploads the package and automatically install it. You can read a message about the success of the procedure. If you get error message, read it thoughtfully and make the correction!

Install from Directory

Decompress the package in a temporary directory of your local machine and decompress the compressed package into it, then with FTP you can upload the files and directories of the package into a directory on the server. Then in the Install Directory field specify the directory where you have uploaded the fles and directories of the package. After it click on the Install button and Joomla! automatically install it.You can read a message about the success of the procedure. If you get error message, read it thoughtfully and make the correction!

Install from URL

In the Install URL field specify the URL of the package to upload and click on the Install button and Joomla! automatically install it. You can read a message about the success of the procedure. If you get error message, read it thoughtfully and make the correction!

Uninstalling the installed extensions

Click on one of the tabs on basis of which type of extension you eant to ininstall! In the list select the extension and click on the Uninstall icon on the upper-right side ot the screen. Joomla! automatically uninstalls the specified extension.

You can uninstall more modules, plugins, languages and templates in one step but you can uninstall only one component in one step.

Quick Tips
Have another think if you want to uninstall one of Joomla addon. For example sometimes it is good idea to unpublish the modules you don't want to show on frontend.

Some Core or System addons (Component, Module, Plugin) cannot be uninstalled. This ones cannot be selected for uninstalling. Also the Default Template and Language are disabled for selecting.
Description
The visual experience of your site front-end and back-end can be controlled in the Template Manager by choosing an installed template. A default template is used on all pages, but different templates can be assigned to various pages. The Template Manager also provides editing capabilities for the main index file of the template and the stlye sheet (CSS) file.

Version Changes
In Joomla! 1.0.x the Template Manager was available from Site -> Template Manager -> Site Templates and Administrator Templates menu item. The parameters of a Joomla! 1.0 template were hardcoded, but the parameters of a Joomla! 1.5 template can be configured easily on the Template [Edit] screen.

In Joomla! 1.5 a template is a type of extensions, so the Template Manager was moved to the Extensions menu.

In Joomla! 1.0 you could have a look at the available template positions by clicking the Site -> Preview -> Inline with Positions menu item. In Joomla! 1.5 you are searching for this menu item in vain. Please click the Preview toolbar button on the Template [Edit] screen instead.
Template Manager can be opened from Extensions -> Template Manager menu item. The installed front-end templates are listed on the Site tab while the back-end templates are available by switching to the Administrator tab.

If you hover over the name of the template, a thumbnail image of that template is displayed.
Clicking on the template name will present the template configuration screen, which provides all the basic details of the template. Parameters available for configuration appear in the Parameters pane.

Clicking the Edit HTML button will display the basic text editor, which was designed to allow minor adjustments. If you click on the Edit CSS button on the template screen, the text editor will be displayed with the style sheet file of the template. For a template with multiple style sheets, you can select which one to edit.

If you are curious about the available module positions, click the Preview button on the toolbar and the site front-end will be loaded showing you the available positions.

Quick Tips
You can switch between the already installed templates for the Site and the Administrator by selecting the desired template and clicking on the Default button on the upper right part of the screen.

Points to Watch
Important: Do not delete the default template files using FTP because it issues in error both frontend and backend!

Before editing the HTML and the CSS file of the template, it is a good idea to make a backup of the file you are editing.

Dependencies
The templates listed in the Template Manager can be installed in the Extension Manager from Extensions -> Install/Uninstall menu item. The unnecessary templates can be removed on the Templates tab of the Extension Manager. Only those templates that may be uninstalled are displayed as accessible, the default templates (site and administrator) cannot be removed.

Important: Do not delete the default template files by using FTP because it issues in error both of frontend and backend!

If you are curious about the available module positions, click the Preview button on the toolbar and the site front-end will be loaded showing you the available positions.
