This tutorial is part of the [[Developing a Model-View-Controller (MVC) Component for Joomla!1.6]] tutorial. You are encouraged to read the previous parts of the tutorial before reading this.

The Joomla!1.6 framework has implemented the use of categories for all components. Adding categorized ability to a component is fairly simple.

== Modifying the SQL ==
In order to manage categories, we have to change the SQL tables.

With your favorite editor, modify ''admin/sql/install.mysql.utf8.sql'' and put these lines:

== Modifying the form ==
A HelloWorld message can now belong to a category. We have to modify the editing form. In the ''admin/models/forms/helloworld.xml'' file, put these lines:

== Modifying the menu type ==
The HelloWorld menu type displays a drop down list of all messages. If the message is categorized, we have to add the category in this display.

You may have noted that the html form contained in the ''[[#admin/views/helloworld/tmpl/edit.php|admin/views/helloworld/tmpl/edit.php]]'' file now has the ''form-validate'' css class. And that we added a ''JHTML::_('behavior.formvalidation');'' call to tell Joomla!1.6 to use its javascript form validation.

Modify the ''admin/models/forms/helloworld.xml'' file to indicate that the ''greeting'' field has to be verified:

It's not clear to me where the word "helloworld" refers to in these examples. Can you please clarify when 'helloworld' refers to the component,controller,model,table,view or form? While following this, I've changed the name of my component, and when running this I get a 'call to member function getTable() on non-object'. It seems that I used the wrong name somewhere, but I have no idea where.

We're also introducing JForms and JFields. These are powerful and important, and warrant some richer explanation.

== Model subtlety ==

Note that the model loaded in the getModel function by the HelloWorlds controller (admin/controllers/helloworlds.php) is NOT the HelloWorlds model; it is instead the HelloWorld model. The HelloWorlds model (HelloWorldModelHelloWorlds) extends JModelList, which has no delete function. The HelloWorld model (HelloWorldModelHelloWorld) extends JModelAdmin, which has the delete function needed to delete items.

Within Joomla there are manifest files for all of the extensions. These files include the general installation information as well as parameters for the configuration of the [[extension]] itself. Since Joomla! 1.6 {{JVer|1.6}}, there are very few differences between the manifest file formats for the different [[Extension types (technical definitions)|types of extensions]], allowing each type to access the full power of the Joomla! installer.

The file must be named manifest.xml or <extension_name>.xml and located in the root directory of the installation package.
