I am a professional English-Hungarian translator living in Hungary and having several years experience in software localization. I met Joomla! still in the Mambo days when I was in the need of migrating a site of mine consisting of static pages into a dynamic content management system. I am the co-founder and board member of Joomla! User Association Hungary and the member of the Hungarian Joomla Translation Team. In my translation and localization projects my purpose is to provide accuracy and precisement. In 2008 I took part in the 1st DocCamp.

How to distribute languages for native Joomla! 1.5 extensions

When you create a translation for a 3PD extension, usually it is included in the package, but sometimes it is distributed separately. In the 2nd case, it may be difficult to tell the user where to upload the language file(s), though it is even more simplier now than was in Joomla! 1.0.x.

To avoid this, by the analogy of the Joomla! 1.5 core languages you can create an installable language pack for a native Joomla! 1.5 extension. You will need to compress the .ini files and an install.xml file for them into a supported archive type with the following code like this for the back-end:

It is recommended to add the method="upgrade" parameter in order to be able to easily install a new version of the language pack. It this parameter is not specified, the installer cannot overwrite the old language file(s) and it results an error.

When an extension has language file(s) for the front-end as well, an additional package should be created. In this case please change the following line of the install.xml file:

In Joomla! 1.5.4 was implemented the single installation of both admin and site language packs what makes the language packs management even more easier for the site administrators. You can create such language pack installer using the following template:

For such kind of language pack installers, you should create an "admin" folder and a "site" folder with the appropriate language files included and an install.xml file added up one level.

Due to the critical vulnerability fixed in Joomla! 1.5.6 it was mandatory to update a web site to this version, so the creation of a single installation pack should be preferred.

Such kind of language packs can be created for the native Joomla! 1.5 extensions developed using the MVC pattern only.

Such a language pack can be installed via the Install tab of the Extension Manager screen opened by the Extensions -> Install/Uninstall menu item. The included language file(s) will be uploaded to the appropriate folder.

For a translator, this method allows him/her to specify the authoring details what are rarely added to the header of a language file. This way the end user will know who to contact for occasional proof-reading or just for a thank you.

For a developer, there is no need to add a language installation feature for their extensions that was a feature for some 1.0.x extensions.

Help screens for Joomla! 1.5 have not progressed very far and we urgently need these to be completed. This list was compiled from Google Analytics data covering one month (29 Nov to 29 Dec 2007). ==Description==
The function of the Module Manager is to control the installed or custom site and administrator modules.

==Version Changes==
In Joomla! 1.5 the Module Manager was moved to the Extensions menu and got a tabbed interface for displaying the site and administrator modules. The below changes are related to both clients:

* The Publish toolbar button was renamed to ''Enable''.
* The Unpublish toolbar button was renamed to ''Disable''.
* ''Go'' and ''Reset'' buttons were added to the ''Filter'' field.
* ''Select Template'' drop down list was added.
* ''Select State'' drop down list was added.
* The Published column was renamed to ''Enabled''.
* Reorder and Order columns merged into one ''Order'' column.
* The Access column is renamed to ''Access Level''.
* The ''ID'' and ''Type'' columns were swapped.
* A column can be sorted ascending/descending by clicking the column header.
* You can create another instance of a module using the ''New'' toolbar button.

==Typical Usage==
You can open the Module Manager by clicking the Extensions -> Module Manager menu item.

One module can be enabled/disabled by clicking the icon in the ''Enabled'' column. The enabled modules are marked with a green tick while the disabled ones are marked with a red X. When you want to enable/disable several modules, select their checkboxes and click the appropriate toolbar button.

When you want to create a copy of one or more modules select the checkbox(es) and click the ''Copy'' toolbar button. An information message will be displayed and you will find the module(s) with the name(s) "Copy of ..." inserted into the module name(s). The copies will have a disabled status.

When you want to delete one or more unnecessary modules select the checkbox(es) and click the ''Delete'' toolbar button. An information message will be displayed and the module(s) will be removed from the list.

You can create another instance of an installed or custom module using the ''New'' toolbar button. When you click it, the ''Module: [New]'' screen will be loaded. Select the desired module and click the ''Next'' toolbar button or simply click the module type.

You can enter the title, [[screen.modules.edit.15|customize]] the details and the parameters and assign it to a menu in the loaded ''Module: [Edit]'' screen.

The four drop down lists make you easier to narrow the list of your choice, or you can enter a string in the ''Filter'' field and click the ''Go'' button to find the matching modules in the list.

The items can be moved up/down by clicking the arrows in the list, or they can be renumbered by entering a value in the field next to the arrow. In this case the order should be saved by clicking the floppy icon.

The access for a module can be changed simply by clicking the Public/Registered/Special value in the ''Access Level'' column.

Some old 1.0.x modules support Joomla! 1.5 in Legacy Mode. To be able to install such extensions please open the [[screen.plugins.15|Plugin Manager]] screen from the Extensions menu and enable plugin System - Legacy as it is disabled by the default.

Help screens for Joomla! 1.5 have not progressed very far and we urgently need these to be completed. This list was compiled from Google Analytics data covering one month (29 Nov to 29 Dec 2007). Help screens for Joomla! 1.5 have not progressed very far and we urgently need these to be completed. This list was compiled from Google Analytics data covering one month (29 Nov to 29 Dec 2007). Interestingly, there are only 32 help screens listed here. There are 63 help screens in total, so about half of the help screens were never accessed in the last month.

The visual experience of your site front-end and back-end can be controlled in the Template Manager by choosing an [[screen.installer.15|installed]] template. A default template is used on all pages, but different templates can be assigned to various pages. The Template Manager also provides editing capabilities for the main index file of the template and the style sheet (CSS) file.

==Description==
The Menu Manager controls the framework, or container of the menu(s) in Joomla!. The actual menu functionality and appearance of a menu is created automatically by Joomla! by triggering a new instance of [mainmenu] when a menu is first created. It is this, together with the menu item(s) selected, that creates the finished menu.

==Typical Usage==
You can open the Menu Manager by clicking its quick icon in the Control Panel after logged in the administration back-end or you can access it from the Menus -> Menu Manager menu item.

Using Menu Manager you can create your menus containing your menu items. This screen summarizes the details of the available menus by displaying the number of published/unpublished, trashed menus and the number of the modules.

You can [[screen.menumanager.new.15|create]] a new menu by clicking the ''New'' toolbar button. You can [[screen.menumanager.new.15|edit]] an existing one by selecting it and clicking the ''Edit'' button on the toolbar or by clicking its title. When you want to create a copy of a menu just select it and click the ''Copy'' toolbar button and the following screen will be displayed:

As you see, the copying menu and its contained menu items are also listed on this screen.

You should fill in two fields:
* Enter the title in the ''New Menu Title'' field.
* Type in the module name in the ''New Module Name'' field.
Click the ''Copy'' toolbar button to complete the process. When all things considered and you decide not to create the copy of the menu, then click the ''Cancel'' button on the toolbar.

You can remove an unnecessary menu by selecting it and clicking the ''Delete'' toolbar button and the following screen will be loaded:

The details are summarized on this screen, so it easier for you to make your decision. Click the ''Delete'' toolbar button to complete the process. When all things considered and you decide not to remove the copy of the menu, then click the ''Cancel'' button on the toolbar.

==Quick Tips==
It is expedient to give talkative title for new menus because later you will see it in the '''Backend Menus menu'''. Its is good idea to fill in the '''Description''' field where you can give some information about the menu. As well it is expedient to enter a short title in the '''Modul title''' field, with this name you can identify the module in the [[screen.modules.15|Module Manager]] that belongs to the respective menu.

When you want to create a new menu, in the Unique Name field use only english alphanumeric characters without space to identify an unique name. It is good idea using only a-z, 0-9 and underscore (_) characters. Please read the tooltips as well!

If you delete an existing menu, do not forget that all of menuitems of the respective menu will be also deleted. So think over what you do!

The menu items belonging to a specific menu listed in the [[screen.menus.15|Menu Item Manager]] can be accessed by clicking the icon in the Menu Item(s) column of the Menu Manager.

Help screens for Joomla! 1.5 have not progressed very far and we urgently need these to be completed. This list was compiled from Google Analytics data covering one month (29 Nov to 29 Dec 2007). Interestingly, there are only 32 help screens listed here. There are 63 help screens in total, so about half of the help screens were never accessed in the last month.
