<translate><!--T:1-->
Enabling Search Engine Friendly (SEF) URLs can cause problems if your website hosting is not properly configured to support the re-writing of URLs. There are many combinations of server technologies and operating systems, so it is not possible to give definitive answers to every problem with SEF URLs, however some of the more common problems are listed below.</translate>

<translate>==Is Your Server Running Apache?== <!--T:2--></translate>

<translate><!--T:3-->
When you enable SEF URLS in Joomla! there is an option to re-write the URLs without ''/index.php/'' which requires ''mod_rewrite'' (or the IIS equivalent). If your server is not running Apache, or does not have the ability to rewrite URLs in this way, you will come across error messages with this option enabled. Try setting this option to ''no'' and see if this method of re-writing works for you.</translate>

<translate><!--T:4-->
Also make sure that you have a ''Directory'' section in your Apache config file that allows ''.htaccess'' overrides, otherwise the ''.htaccess'' file in your Joomla! root directory '''will be ignored'''. The directive needed is:</translate>

AllowOverride all

<translate>==Is Your Server Running IIS?== <!--T:5--></translate>

<translate><!--T:6-->
If you are using IIS check out these links which may be useful:</translate>

<translate><!--T:8-->
When you make any changes to SEF settings make sure that you clear your cache. If you are caching URLS (for example, using a third-party SEF extension), make sure that you change any settings there, and purge cached URLs.</translate>

Sometimes if you have changed domains (for example, from a localhost or test environment to the live domain), you will need to edit the value for the ''$live_site'' variable in the ''configuration.php'' file found in the root directory of your Joomla site files. See [https://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=811&t=998357 Leave $live_site=<nowiki>''</nowiki> in configuration.php] for more information.</translate>

<translate><!--T:11-->
Typically, it would look like:</translate>
<syntaxhighlight lang="php">
var $live_site = 'https://example.com';

<translate><!--T:12-->
Or, if you access your website in a sub-folder called ''joomla'', it would be like this:</translate>
<syntaxhighlight lang="php">
var $live_site = 'https://example.com/joomla';

<translate><!--T:13-->
When you move domains, this value may need updating to reflect your new domain name:</translate>
<syntaxhighlight lang="php">
var $live_site = 'https://mynewdomain.com';

<translate><!--T:14-->
Often there is no need to specify this variable at all. Simply leave it blank:</translate>
Many times you install Joomla in a subdirectory and then want to move it to a higher level directory. Here's a short tutorial on how to do it.</translate>

<translate><!--T:2-->
Say you have installed Joomla in the ''public_html/tryjoomla'' folder.</translate>
<translate><!--T:3-->
Now that you are satisfied with the site, you'll want to move to ''public_html''.</translate>

<translate><!--T:4-->
1. Move all the files from the subdirectory (i.e., ''public_html/tryjoomla'') to the upper level directory (i.e., ''public_html''). You can use your favourite FTP client or the control panel file manager that your hosting service provides.</translate>

<translate><!--T:5-->
2. Download and open the ''configuration.php'' file in a text editor.</translate>

<translate><!--T:6-->
3. Simply remove the ''tryjoomla'' folder name from the path. Look for these lines:</translate>

<syntaxhighlight lang="php">
var $log_path = '/home/username/public_html/tryjoomla/administrator/logs';
var $tmp_path = '/home/username/public_html/tryjoomla/tmp';
</syntaxhighlight>

<translate><!--T:7-->
Change to:</translate>

<syntaxhighlight lang="php">
var $log_path = '/home/username/public_html/administrator/logs';
var $tmp_path = '/home/username/public_html/tmp';
</syntaxhighlight>

<translate><!--T:8-->
N.B. The ''$live_site'' variable should not be given a value. If it was given a value during installation, edit that path as well, for example:</translate>

<syntaxhighlight lang="php">
var $live_site = 'http://www.example.com';
</syntaxhighlight>
<translate><!--T:9-->
Change to:</translate>
<syntaxhighlight lang="php">
var $live_site = '';
</syntaxhighlight>

<translate><!--T:10-->
4. Check your site's ''.htaccess'' file. The subfolder should be removed as well. The RewriteBase directive should be commented out. Check for a RewriteRule that contains the old subdirectory.</translate>

<translate><!--T:11-->
5. Verify that no redirect orders to the old subdirectory are in place in your hosting control panel.</translate>

<translate><!--T:12-->
If you have cache enabled, login to the Backend (which will now be at ''<nowiki>http://www.example.com/administrator</nowiki>'' and not ''<nowiki>http://www.example.com/tryjoomla/administrator</nowiki>''). Go to {{rarr|Tools,Clean Cache}} and delete all cache files.</translate>

<noinclude>
<translate>
== Introduction == <!--T:1-->
</translate>

<translate><!--T:2-->
This tutorial is an introduction to creating Joomla! templates. It will cover the essential files and code needed to create a basic template. The code is presented so it can be copy and pasted with very little modification needed.</translate>

<translate>
== Setting Up a Directory Structure == <!--T:3-->
</translate>
<translate><!--T:4-->
To make the most basic template, create a new folder in the ''templates'' folder. Name this folder after your template, i.e. ''mynewtemplate''.</translate>

<translate><!--T:5-->
Using a text editor create the files ''index.php'' and ''templateDetails.xml''.
To keep things organized, make 2 new folders called ''images'' and ''css''. Inside the ''css'' folder, create a file called ''template.css''.</translate>

<translate><!--T:6-->
Although it is fine to place all your [[S:MyLanguage/Cascading Style Sheet (CSS)|CSS]] code directly in your ''index.php'' file to start, many web developers prefer to place their CSS code in a separate file that can be linked from multiple pages using the ''link'' tag. This will reduce the loading time of your pages, since the separate file can be cached.</translate>

<translate><!--T:7-->
This is the most basic practical setup. Outline of folder and file structure:</translate>
* mynewtemplate/
** css/
*** template.css
** images/
** index.php
** templateDetails.xml
<translate>

== Creating a Basic ''templateDetails.xml'' file == <!--T:8-->
</translate>
<translate><!--T:9-->
The ''templateDetails.xml'' file is essential. Without it, your template won't be seen by Joomla!. The file holds key [[Wikipedia:Metadata|metadata]] about the template.</translate>

<translate><!--T:10-->
The syntax of the file is different for each Joomla version.</translate>

<translate><!--T:11-->
For {{JVer|1.5}}, use the following:</translate>

<syntaxhighlight lang="xml">
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE install PUBLIC "-//Joomla! 1.5//DTD template 1.0//EN" "http://www.joomla.org/xml/dtd/1.5/template-install.dtd">
<install version="1.5" type="template">
<name>mynewtemplate</name>
<creationDate>2008-05-01</creationDate>
<authorEmail>john@example.com</authorEmail>
<version>1.0.2</version>
<description>My New Template</description>
<files>
<filename>index.php</filename>
<filename>templateDetails.xml</filename>
<folder>images</folder>
<folder>css</folder>
</files>
<positions>
<position>breadcrumb</position>
<position>left</position>
<position>right</position>
<position>top</position>
<position>user1</position>
<position>user2</position>
<position>user3</position>
<position>user4</position>
<position>footer</position>
</positions>

<translate><!--T:12-->
For {{JVer|2.5}} and later, use the following version. Change ''version="2.5"'' into the version of your Joomla! installation.</translate>

<syntaxhighlight lang="xml">
<version>1.0.2</version>
<description>My New Template</description>
<files>
<filename>index.php</filename>
<filename>templateDetails.xml</filename>
<folder>images</folder>
<folder>css</folder>
</files>
<positions>
<position>breadcrumb</position>
<position>left</position>
<position>right</position>
<position>top</position>
<position>user1</position>
<position>user2</position>
<position>user3</position>
<position>user4</position>
<position>footer</position>
</positions>
</extension>
</syntaxhighlight>

<translate><!--T:13-->
So, as you can see, we have a set of information between markup tags (the ''<element>''s). Your best approach is to copy and paste this into your ''templateDetails.xml'' file and change the relevant bits (such as ''<name>'' and ''<author>'').</translate>

<translate><!--T:14-->
The ''<files>'' part should contain all the files that you use. You might not know what they are called yet. Don't worry, update it later. The ''<folder>'' element can be used to define an entire folder at once.</translate>

<translate><!--T:15-->
Leave the positions as they are. These are a common set so you will be able to switch easily from the standard templates.</translate>

<translate>
== Creating a Basic ''index.php'' file == <!--T:16-->
</translate>
{{:Creating a basic index file/<translate><!--T:17-->
en</translate>}}

<translate><!--T:18-->
This leaves a final file of:</translate>

<syntaxhighlight lang="php">
<?php defined('_JEXEC') or die('Restricted access');?>
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html xml:lang="<?php echo $this->language; ?>" lang="<?php echo $this->language; ?>" >
<head>
<jdoc:include type="head" />
<link rel="stylesheet" href="<?php echo $this->baseurl ?>/templates/<?php echo $this->template ?>/css/template.css" type="text/css" />
</head>
<body>
<jdoc:include type="modules" name="top" />
<jdoc:include type="component" />
<jdoc:include type="modules" name="footer" />
</body>
</html>
</syntaxhighlight>

<translate>
== Testing the Template == <!--T:19-->
</translate>
<translate><!--T:20-->
Find the template in the Template Manager, select it and click ''Default'' to make it the default template.</translate>

<translate><!--T:21-->
{{JVer|1.5}} In Joomla! 1.5, your new template will show up immediately in the [[Help15:Screen.templates.15|Template Manager]], accessible via Extensions -> Template Manager.</translate>

<translate><!--T:22-->
{{JVer|2.5}}+ In the Joomla! 2.5 series and later, you first need to tell Joomla! that you have created a new template. This feature is called ''Discover Extensions'' and can be accessed via {{rarr|Extensions,Extension Manager,Discover}} (i.e. the Discover ''tab''). Click ''Discover'' (i.e. the Discover ''button'') to discover your template. Then select it and click ''Install'' to install it. Now your template should show up in the [[Help16:Extensions_Template_Manager_Styles|Template Manager (Styles)]], accessible via {{rarr|Extensions,Template Manager}}.</translate>

<translate><!--T:23-->
Note you can create your template outside of Joomla and simply install it like any regular extension.</translate>

<translate><!--T:24-->
HINT: there are a couple of ways you can preview your index page as you put it together. Either insert the styles into the head of the index page or directly link it to the style sheet you will be using temporarily. You can remove these links before packaging the file.</translate>

<translate>
== Packaging the Template for Installation == <!--T:25-->
</translate>
{{:Packaging_a_extension/<translate><!--T:26-->
'''Note!''' The methods discussed in this article apply to old, outdated and unsupported versions of Joomla! and are to be used entirely at your own risk!</translate>|type=serious}}

<translate><!--T:55-->
In some cases it may not be possible to use the Extension Manager: Update method to update your site. One reason for this might be that you are using a non-standard distribution (for example, a distribution with a different default language installed). Another reason might be that you don't have a reliable Internet connection to support automatic installation.</translate>

<translate><!--T:56-->
In this case, you can still do an easy installation using the Extension Manager: Install screen. Like the Update screen, this method will do the database updates automatically and will completely update your system without any further steps.</translate>

<translate>
==Step 1: Make sure you have a current backup of your site== <!--T:57-->
</translate>
<translate><!--T:58-->
In many cases, your host will make periodic site backups.</translate>

<translate>
==Step 2: Locate the update file== <!--T:59-->
</translate>
<translate><!--T:60-->
Locate the required archive file (for example, .zip, .tag.gz, or tar.bz2 archive) for your version. If you are updating to an x.x.0 release (for example, from 1.7.3 to 2.5.0), this will normally be a file like Joomla_2.5.0-Stable-Update_Package.zip. If you are updating within the same release series (for example, 2.5.0 to 2.5.1), then the file will be named something like Joomla_2.5.0_to_2.5.1-Stable-Patch_Package.zip.</translate>

<translate><!--T:61-->
At this point, you have three options:</translate>
<translate><!--T:62-->
# Install from URL</translate>
<translate><!--T:63-->
# Install from Directory</translate>
<translate><!--T:64-->
# Upload Package File</translate>

<translate><!--T:65-->
Install from URL is the easiest to do. With this option, the upgrade archive is loaded directly by the server, so it works well even if your local computer has a slow or unreliable Internet connection.</translate>

<translate><!--T:66-->
Install from Directory is the safest method if the server itself has a slow Internet connection. With this method, you use FTP to load the unpacked update files into a temporary folder on the server. Then you point to that directory on the server for the installation.</translate>

<translate><!--T:67-->
Upload Package File is fairly simple, but it requires that you have a good connection between your local computer and the server.</translate>

The screen below shows the Extension Manager: Install screen with the three options labeled.
[[Image:Update-screenshot-20120124-03-<translate><!--T:68-->
en</translate>.png|frame|center]]

<translate>
===Install from URL=== <!--T:69-->
</translate>
<translate><!--T:70-->
This option is the easiest if the archive file is available on a Website.</translate>
<translate><!--T:71-->
# In the Extension Manager: Install screen, enter the URL for the archive file in the Install URL field.</translate>
<translate><!--T:72-->
# Press the Install button.</translate>
<translate><!--T:73-->
The system will work for a period of time - up to two minutes or more for a full version update. Then a message indicating a successful installation will display.</translate>

<translate>
===Install from Directory=== <!--T:74-->
</translate>
<translate><!--T:75-->
This option requires that you unpack the archive file in a directory on your server. This is the best method if you have a slow Internet connection or you are experiencing timeouts during the update process.</translate>
<translate><!--T:76-->
# Unpack the archive file in a temporary directory on your local machine.</translate>
<translate><!--T:77-->
# Upload all the files in this directory (for example, using FTP) to a temporary directory that is visible to the Web server. For example, you can create a sub-directory under the tmp directory in your Joomla root. For this example, let's say the directory on the server is <code>/home/myuser/myjoomla/tmp/upgrade250</code>).</translate>
<translate><!--T:78-->
# In the Extension Manager: Install screen, enter the full path of the temporary directory (on the server) from step 2 (for example, <code>/home/myuser/myjoomla/tmp/upgrade250</code>).</translate>
<translate><!--T:79-->
# Press the Install button.</translate>
<translate><!--T:80-->
The system will work for a short time (perhaps a minute or less, depending on your server). Then a message indicating a successful installation will display.</translate>

<translate>
===Upload a Package File=== <!--T:81-->
</translate>
<translate><!--T:82-->
This option requires that you first download the archive file to your local machine.</translate>
<translate><!--T:83-->
# Download the file to your local computer.</translate>
<translate><!--T:84-->
# In the Extension Manager: Install screen, click the Browse button next to the Package File field and browse to the archive file.</translate>
<translate><!--T:85-->
# Press the Install button.</translate>
<translate><!--T:86-->
The system will work for a period of time - up to two minutes or more for a full version update. Then a message indicating a successful installation will display.</translate>

<translate><!--T:87-->
The database will be small when at the start (less than 0.5 Mb) that grows when adding more users and content and additional extensions).
Be aware that some unofficial installation packages exists—such as those offered by webhosting providers or third-party extension vendors (e.g. installations for demonstration purposes)—that contain extra features not available with the official installation package. People who use these unofficial installation packages should also be aware that the Joomla! project does not recommend or endorse these things and they often result in leaving websites created by these unofficial methods vulnerable, unmaintainable or unsuitable for long-term production use.

The Joomla! project recommends people should download the latest version of the installation package (available from https://downloads.joomla.org) and that people should regularly update/upgrade their website to the current stable and supported version. A quick summary of the [https://downloads.joomla.org/technical-requirements technical requirements] needed for operating the Joomla! CMS can be found on the Joomla download page.

There have been some changes to the '''Joomla! Update''' component since this documentation was written. In particular, the screenshot that shows a "Purge Cache" button appears to be outdated. I will need to undertake further research but in the latest version (J! 3.9.8) I can only find a "Check for Updates" button.
