Provides an overview of the menus available on a Joomla site. This includes the details of each individual menu's number of items published, unpublished and names of linked modules.

==Description==
Menus allow a user to navigate through the site. A menu is an object which contains one or more menu items. Each menu item points to a logical page on the site. A menu module is required to place the menu on the page. One menu can have more than one module. For example, one module might show only the first level menu items and a second module might show the level 2 menu items.

The process for adding a menu to the site is normally as follows:
# Create a new menu (using this screen).
# Create one or more new menu items on the menu. Each menu item will have a specific menu item type.
# Create one or more menu modules to display the menu on the site. When you create the modules, you will select which menu items (pages) the modules will show on.

==How to Access==
In the backend of Joomla! use either '''Menus → Menu Manager''' or the icon '''Menus''' from the control panel.

==Column Headers==
Clicking on the title of a column will sort the table view by the column. A down arrow next to the column title means ascending order and an up arrow means descending order. The default sort is by '''ID#''' in ascending order.

==Quick Tips==
* It is expedient to give a descriptive title for new menus because, later, you will see it in the ''Backend Menus'' menu. It is a good idea to fill in the ''Description'' field with information about the menu. If you enter a short title in the ''Module title'' field, you can identify the menu's module using that title in the Module Manager.
* Though you can create a copy of a selected menu by clicking the ''Copy'' toolbar button, you can make another instance in the Module Manager as well.
* When you create a new menu, use only English alphanumeric characters without space in the Unique Name field. It is a good idea using only a-z, 0-9 and underscore (_) characters. Please read the tooltips as well.
* If you don't enter a ''Module title'', no module will be created and the menu cannot be displayed in the front end. However you can use the Module Manager later to create a new mod_mainmenu module, and assign it to the menu.
* If you delete an existing menu, do not forget that all the menu items of the respective menu will be also deleted.
* The Main Menu has your default menu item, so it '''should not be deleted'''. The default menu item is your home page, and your site will not function if it is deleted. If you change the default menu item, make sure that you don't delete that menu item either! The menu with the default menu item is marked with an asterisk (*) in the ''Menus'' menu.

In Joomla!, submenus can be shown either as one menu with two or more levels or as completely separate menu modules. To show how to do this, we will step through creating a two-level menu and then see how to show it either as one large menu or as separate parent and child menus.

==Sample Data==
In our example, we will create a menu called "Pets". It will have two top-level menu items called "Dogs" and "Cats". Under Dogs, we will have "Collies" and "Greyhounds". Under Cats we will have "Tabbies" and "Siamese". So the structure of the Pets menu will be as follows:
*Dogs
**Collies
**Greyhounds
*Cats
**Tabbies
**Siamese

==Menu and Menu Items==
To create this structure, we create one menu with two levels of Menu Items. Note that we do this whether we want to have everything shown as one large menu or whether we want to create separate menu modules (one parent menu and two child menus). We'll see how to do this later on, when we create the modules.

Here are the steps to create the Menu and Menu Items.

==Menu Modules==
At this point, we've got the [http://docs.joomla.org/J3.2:Adding_a_new_menu Menu] and [http://docs.joomla.org/Adding_a_new_menu_item Menu Items] done. Now we need to create the Menu Modules. In Joomla!, the Menu Module determines three main things: a) what the menu looks like; b) where on the page it will show; and c) on which pages it will show. We will do two examples. In the first example, we will create [http://docs.joomla.org/J3.2:Creating_a_submenu#One_Menu_Module one Menu Module] that shows all of the items in one menu. In the second, we will create three [http://docs.joomla.org/J3.2:Creating_a_submenu#Separate_Menu_Modules separate menu modules] to show the Pets, Dogs, and Cats menus as separate modules.

===One Menu Module===
To show this as one module, follow these steps:
# Navigate to Extensions → Module Manager, click the "New" icon in the toolbar, and select "Menu".
# Enter the Title as "Pets Menu" and Position as "left". (Left top, )

# In "Select Menu" select "Pets" from the drop-down list.
# If you are using the default "rhuk_milkyway" template and want the menu to look like the other menus, in the Advanced Parameters enter "_menu" for Module Class Suffix.
# By the "Show Sub-menu Items" click on the "No" button.

Now, navigate to the front-end home page or refresh/reload it. You should see the Pets Menu as shown below:[[Image:submenu_example3.png|frame|center]]Click on the Dogs Menu Item. The selected article displays and the Dogs menu expands to show the two submenu items, Collies and Greyhounds. Note that the default in "Show Sub-menu Items" was to always show sub-menu items. We changed it to "show off".

Click on "Collies" and again the article changes. (Or it would if we had different articles for each Menu Item!) The screen should look like the one below: [[Image:submenu_example4.png|frame|center]]

Notice that the Breadcrumbs now shows three levels: Home, Dogs, Collies. Because we used submenus, Joomla! "knows" that Collies is under Dogs.

===Separate Menu Modules===
Now we will change our example to create three separate menus -- one for the top level (Dogs and Cats), one for the Dogs (Collies and Greyhounds), and one for the Cats (Tabbies and Siamese).

Click on the Collies Menu Item and notice that again the Breadcrumbs shows the hierarchy of "Home", "Dogs", and "Collies".

==Sub-Sub-Menus==
Using this same technique, it is easy to create third-level sub-menus. You just make the Parent Menu Item a second-level sub-menu. Then you could use the same technique to create a separate Menu Module with Start Level of 2 and End Level of 3. This would show only the third-level Menu Items.

Hi :)
I have created this new page within the wiki and tried to follow the same path as the rest of the pages for 3.2.x

I don't know how to add the link at the top-right to take people to the same page for other versions. I don't think there was a separate one for 2.5 as the generic one covering all versions was plenty close enough. It's only in 3.2 that significant changes seem to have happened afaik.

For the section on Menu&MenuItems it made MUCH more sense to space-out the numbered list so that people can easily work through a section and then come back and repeat the section (4-6) later. I considered indenting it, as a sub-section, but i think it flows better with just the spacing.

I've not worked through the "Menu Modules" section as thoroughly but i think that one makes more sense as it is anyway.

I've not been able to do the screen-shots as light-weight and am not sure about how to upload screen-shots anyway. So i have just written a little line by each to describe the difference. I didn't know how to drop the font-size or italicise it but i think it just about works as is. Anyway it'd be better to change the screen-shots and then the extra lines can be removed so there is not much point working at the font.

The "Separate Menu Modules" hasn't been worked on at all. From point 5 onwards is the most confusing as "Start Level" no longer starts at 0. I tried using 1 instead and then adding +1 to the "End Level" but couldn't work out what the instructions were aiming for nor what effect the levels were having in practice. Hopefully i'll figure that out and come back to edit the wiki another day or another week.
