In Joomla! 3.7.0 there's the parameter to activate the new URL Router (Modern Routing).
To activate it for contents you need to access the Options of Article Manager, in the TAB Integration, and enable the "URL Routing" parameter. There are, however, currently known problems with this parameter activated

Errors reported

• The URLs of single articles do not work if there is not a menu item related to these items.Issue: https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/issues/13133
• The 404 error page is no longer displayed in the case of non-existing URLs, but in these cases the homepage is opened. Here the opened tracker waiting for a solution: https://issues.joomla.org/tracker/joomla-cms/12822
